Are you ready to Rock?  The Arthritis Introspective 2013 National Gathering Conference-G6 (May 17-20, 2013) is almost here and we need you to make this year a record breaker!  This year we will gather in scenic Scottsdale, AZ at the beautiful Chaparral Suites for a weekend of empowerment, education and encouragement with two days full of sessions designed to give you and those you love the “instruments” to rock your life with arthritis. Life with arthritis can be a rocky road and we often forget to take time to look around and celebrate the little victories, the mountains big and small, that we face almost daily. Mixed metaphors aside, we are all ROCK STARS! So this year, be ready to celebrate YOU and those who make up your awesome band.  The Arthritis Introspective National Gathering is a place to meet others like you (age 20-50+), living with arthritis during the prime of life. This year’s program track includes information on the surgical advances in orthopedics, biologic treatments and complimentary therapies; as well as sessions on early “retirement” (the ups and downs of long-term disability), communication and relationships, sex and intimacy and our ever popular Loved Ones track, which gives your loved ones a safe place to share their own fears and frustrations.

Fall was a busy season for the members of Arthritis Introspective. While some of us were busy getting the kids (or ourselves) into the routine of the new school year others were embarking on cross-country moves, half-marathons, surgeries and skydiving.  It’s been a season of firsts and as we are surrounded by the merriment and madness of the holiday season, we at AI are incredibly grateful to have such amazing members who share with and inspire us daily.   On October 20, the Arthritis Foundation, Pacific Region held its third annual Arthritis in Primetime at the Long Beach Renaissance Hotel in California. The theme of this year’s symposium was “Let’s Connect: Relationships, Arthritis & Related Conditions.” Break out sessions covered a variety of topics from arthritis in the workplace to intimacy and sexuality to building your own medical team.  Arthritis Introspective was proud to be a partner in this day of education and empowerment and are looking forward to future collaborations with the AF Pacific Region.

In his book The Different Drum, M. Scott Peck writes, “One of my joys, whenever I return to community, is that the 'gift of tears' is returned to me. I am not alone. Once a group has achieved community, the single most common thing members express is: I feel safe here.”      That is exactly what occurred at the fifth annual National Arthritis Introspective Gathering March 9-12th at the Marriott Sugarland in Texas. Nearly 60 AI members from New York to LA, came together for a weekend of education, empowerment and lots of emotion, while creating a basket full of Sweet Memories. It was an exciting year for the Gathering. Not only was it our FIFTH anniversary, but also with half of the attendees being first timers, the event was even more powerful and more exciting for all involved. We also welcomed more partners and loved ones than ever before, proving again that arthritis affects everyone, not just the person diagnosed.

Well, Happy New Year to all of our dedicated members and friends. We’re a month in and 2012 is looking very promising for Arthritis Introspective. We are very excited about our growing momentum and the collaborations. Not only has 2012 brought AI its 500th Facebook Fan (www.facebook.com/ArthritisIntrospective), but it marks our FIFTH anniversary. Looking back, it seems like yesterday when the founding board sat at a local eatery, bouncing ideas around and dreaming of a national network of empowerment, education and support.
