Arthritis Support Network Leader: Laurie Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis
About this Arthritis Support Network:
My vision for this Arthritis Support Network is to bring together a community of people who have been affected by arthritis in their own lives or in the lives of a loved one in an upbeat, educational setting that provides support, socialization, and education to its members.
My name is Laurie and I'm employed full time as a regional director for a property management company. I was diagnosed with RA a little over a year ago when I woke up one morning and could barely walk from my bed to the bathroom because of pain and stiffness. After over 10 years of complaining about knee pain, plantar fasciitis, painful leg cramps, periods of pain that made walking difficult to my doctor and physical therapists and being told I was just overweight and until I lost weight there was nothing they could do to help me, I finally went to a rheumatologist after having been referred to a sports medicine doctor instead by my primary physician. My rheumatologist completed a panel of blood work indication I have seronegative RA. Since then, I've been treated with Methotrexate and most recently Humira which have my flare ups under control. I'm also seeing a physical therapist for my hip that became twisted during the years of not being treated. This has been a challenging year, but I now almost walk without a limp now and even more importantly have gained much insight into what it means to allow other people to help and to ask for help when needed. I feel stronger in mind and spirit because of the fight with RA I've waged this past year. I now want to be able to take this experience and help others.
I am leading an Arthritis Support Network because when I was first diagnosed with RA and searched for a support group in my area, I was disappointed to see there were none. I decided then that once I was in a position of physically being able to do so, that I would reach out to the Arthritis Foundation to see if they had any volunteer opportunity for start something in my community and found out about the Support Network. I was pleased to find out that they were looking for a leader in my area and quickly applied for this volunteer opportunity.
