Arthritis Support Network launched: 2017

Arthritis Support Network Leader: Virginia                        Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis

About this Arthritis Support Network:

My vision for this Arthritis Support Network (ASN) is to help improve other's lives who live with arthritis and rheumatic diseases by bringing more resources, education and support to the valley.

About: Virginia

Hi everyone! I'm Virginia and I'm 50-something years old. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis in 2011. The Rheumatoid Doctor seems to think I had it much earlier than this.

I enjoy traveling, scrapbooking, walking, Reading and all kinds of crafts. I can't do everything I could before but I try and do most of what I can. I work Full time as Media Assistant at a local elementary school. Yes some days are harder than others to make it to work but I do what I can. I have always wanted to help people and I'm happy to have this chance.

I want to start an Arthritis Support Network because of the lack of support in this area for people with arthritis.  I don't want others to feel that they are alone in this and want to learn all I can from others about this disease to share with others. I want to bring more support and resources to this area.

Hi everyone,

So excited about this new group.  I hope I find people who are struggling with getting a diagnosis. Also, I hope to find positive ways to manage my pain and insomnia. The group leader, Virginia, is a friend of mine.  She is going to be a great leader. I am going to pass the word out because lots of people are suffering.

I like to write, color, listen to contemporary music, computer time, and go to my church. Love connecting with people.

Hello and thank you for adding me.  I see that this is the only support group listed in Virginia.  Does anyone know if there is a support group in Northern Virginia, near DC?  Thank you! Deb

Hi Deborah  - not yet  and we are growing.  We do have a group that will be serving the greater Baltimore area.

I also live in Northern Virginia -- and joined this group because it was the closest one I could find.

I am 64 years old, and was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis nearly 2 years ago.  I am struggling to find a medication that can help me.  I started with Plaquenil, and when that didn't work, we added Methyltrexate.  But when the RA started impacting my lungs, I had to stop that.  I'm now taking a combination of about 5 drugs -- some anti-inflamatories to control the pain and two other RA drugs that hopefully will kick in to control the flares and pain.

Even with all of this medication I'm struggling.  Some of it I believe to be side effects of the medications, and some pain.  My doctor believes some of my pain is OA.  But I never had OA pain before my RA diagnosis -- so I'm really not certain what is what!

I'd like to find some naturopathic ways to deal with my RA.  Has anyone had any success with any natural treatments??

Thanks!
