About this Arthritis Support Network:
We want participants of this group to connect to one another and to connect to the outside world - the city of San Antonio. We want this to be a place where family members can learn and understand us better if they come. We want it to be a place where we go places and get outside of ourselves and our pain. We want us to experience the power of the city and the power of connecting to one another. We would like to assist in empowering others, with the knowledge and resources, to help them feel supported when coping with Arthritis.
I not only have rheumatoid arthritis, but fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, and gluten intolerance. My husband has RA, fibro, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and scoliosis. His symptoms began two years after mine. I had to be his advocate even when he was ready to give up because no one would believe there was anything wrong with him since he was a man and so young. My diseases are aggressive and crazy and I fight back with all that I am on a daily basis.
We have two small children and are in this crazy struggle together. It is hard and scary and challenging. At the end of the day, we are not defined by any of these diseases and live our lives to the best of our ability. We are more than pain and more than flares, and more than suffering. We are alive and try to enjoy each day the best that we can.
It has been my dream, since I was diagnosed, to become an advocate for those struggling with rheumatoid arthritis. I found a support group within the first few months of diagnosis when I lived in Austin, and that group strengthened me and encouraged me when I felt alone and scared and overwhelmed. I found courage, medical advice, assistance advice and techniques, along with hope that I was unable to find anywhere else. This disease rips away connections to others and I wish to bridge that gap and create the connection that is often taken away for so many.
I am married and a mom of 3 young children. I was diagnosed with RA and Lupus in 2012. I have taken a more holistic approach this last year and it has worked well for me. I refuse to let my diseases define who I am and what kind of life I live. I adapt to what life brings and try to stay positive.
I want to help support our group and make a positive impact on people living with Arthritis. I also want to learn and advocate on the behalf of all people suffering with autoimmune diseases. This is a lifelong journey and I plan on being proactive in making the best of it, not just for myself, but for all people living with this disease.
