Arthritis Support Network launched: 2018
Arthritis Support Network Leader: Delia Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis
About this Arthritis Support Network:
My vision for this support network is to offer help to others who are newly diagnosed and those who have lived with their diseases for many years. Personally, it would have been so awesome to have someone to talk to and confide in who knew how I felt. Talking to family and friends was very difficult because they didn’t know how to help. This group will educate and empower us as individuals and give us a chance to make friends and confidants. I want to help someone feel a little less hopeless and a lot less alone.
Hi there! My name is Delia and I’m excited to be part of this program! I have been living with Rheumatoid Arthritis for about 29 years or so.
Here’s my story…I was a cheerleader in high school and afraid of heights, so I insisted on being a ‘base’ most of the time. I thought I just over-exerted myself by having someone that weighed as much as I did or more sitting/standing on my shoulders. The team trainer would wrap my ankles and wrists for extra support. When I was a senior I wrote an 8-page paper and my whole forearm swelled up like a balloon. I went to the doctor and he told me I didn’t have RA because my Rheumatoid Factor was negative. So, I went for another couple of years until I
tried another doctor who officially diagnosed me with RA even though my Rheumatoid Factor was still negative. Back then there weren’t any medications that made a substantial difference in my pain and stiffness. It was a very confusing and frustrating time. It was easy to get down and depressed because of the pain. But I’m not the type of person to just sit and do nothing. It didn’t take long to realize I had to take charge of my own health and wellness. It was the best decision I ever made because I felt more in control when things seemed hopeless. I am currently on a biologic and it’s been my miracle medication.
This group will educate and empower us as individuals and give us a chance to make friends and confidants. I want to help someone feel a little less hopeless and a lot less alone.
