About this Arthritis Support Network:

My vision for the Philadelphia Arthritis Support Network is to create a welcoming environment where participants from all walks of life can support and engage each other through a relation of personal experience and education, while participating in enlightening and uplifting activities.

About:  Dana

Hello! My name is Dana. In April of 2016 I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was unnerved, but also relieved that finally, after several years, someone was able to tell me what was causing the pain and fatigue that was changing my life. I’m a life long Philadelphian who loves tea, the guitar and various genres of music, is an avid reader and cinephile, an amateur sleuth and astronomer and an obsessive hiker/walker. Having RA has changed the way I approach and do some of the things I love, and sometimes I can’t do them at all, so when I get to enjoy those things, I appreciate them even more. I’m inspired by all of the people I’ve come across so far that are doing what works for them in order to live their best life while living with RA. I go from being discouraged when a treatment doesn’t work for me or causes bad side effects, to encouraged when one does and helps me feel like I felt before RA. I know I have limitations in doing some things right now, but I’m determined to live the quality of life that I want however RA affects it.

I am leading an Arthritis Support Network because when I was diagnosed with RA, I was given good, solid information about the disease and felt well informed about the medical aspects of it. I knew what I had, understood what it was, but didn’t know anyone who had RA. I went online and sought out blogs and forums to find out what people with RA were experiencing, how they felt about having it, and how they coped. It was great sharing my thoughts with people online, but I wanted to make a more direct and personal connection so I looked for a local support group. I was surprised there weren’t any arthritis groups. I began thinking about starting one myself, but wasn’t sure how to go about it.

I recently met a couple by chance where the husband has RA, and being able to talk face to face with someone who has the same disease as I do filled a void I didn’t know I had. I loved the more personal interaction and it spurred me on to contribute in a more active way in supporting and learning from others who live with arthritis. I think leading a support group will be a great way to help coalesce the arthritis community in my area.
