About this Live Yes! Connect Group:
My vision for this group is to bring together people living with arthritis and/or other rheumatic diseases for positive, empowering and uplifting support. I want us to create a group that provides a supportive, fun, relaxed, informative, and empowering place where everyone feels valued and part of something.
I realized a huge need for a support group in this area after searching for a year and not finding one within a reasonable driving distance. Like most of us, after being diagnosed, I searched for information and support anywhere I could find it. I had heard of R.A. but had no idea what I was getting ready to have to deal with! The only support I could find from others who had R.A. was online. I have been involved in some of these support groups; however, it’s not the same as a face-to-face group. Sometimes just having somewhere to go, is help in itself.
I know how overwhelming it can be to deal with a chronic illness. At the age of 48, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis after only a few months of symptoms and fatigue. I am lucky that my disease is being managed well through both medication and self-help strategies.
My rheumatoid arthritis has been life changing. Though there are struggles, it certainly has not been all negative. I love to help people, whether it is family and friends or through volunteer opportunities. Through my involvement with arthritis causes, I have met and connected with many wonderful new people. I have been a volunteer with the Arthritis Foundation for 3 years serving in many different capacities. I am a Platinum Ambassador, I am on the Board for Eastern Pennsylvania, Walk to Cure Arthritis Philadelphia Chair, Walk to Cure Philadelphia Honoree and National Honoree.
I have always faced challenges in my life” head on” and I carry that philosophy in my journey with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I credit much of my positive outlook and can-do spirit to my parents. My father was a Colonel in the Army, and as an Army brat, my life growing up was quite unique. It was not only a great way to grow up and see the world, but also it exposed me to many experiences and life lessons that have carried over into my adult life.
I am a mother of two wonderful grown sons and for the past 25 years, I have worked in the financial services industry in leadership positions. I have learned so much during those years and can use many of the skills to facilitate a great group. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with family & friends, exercising when I can and I’m addicted to Broadway so any day in NYC is a great day!
Despite our challenges, it's important to have fun too. Our group is not only a supportive place, it’s also a place to laugh and be inspired!
Chronic illness can be overwhelming and isolating and I want people to know there is a group they can reach out to that understands and wants to help and support them. My goal is to create an environment for our group members that is empowering, uplifting and supportive - where everyone can come and be themselves.
