Arthritis Support Network launched: 2017
Arthritis Support Network Leader: Linda Type of Arthritis: Psoriatic Arthritis
About this Arthritis Support Network:
My vision is to reach out to as many people as I can that are afflicted with arthritis. I want to be supportive to their needs and educate people in various ways so they can manage and live the best life possible with arthritis. I would like our community to be aware of the challenges that confront people with arthritis and that this disease affects people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. And lastly, I would like to create a fundraising event in our area to support the Arthritis Foundation.
Hello, Please let me introduce myself. My name is Linda and I'm in my 60s.
My husband and I retired a few years ago so that we could enjoy our “golden years” together. Aside from spending quality time with our family, children and especially our lovely and energetic grandchildren, we also enjoy golfing, biking and walking trails. I’m an avid gardener and take much pride in my summer flower gardens attracting beautiful birds to my bird feeders.
In May 2017, after a river excursion of kayaking and canoeing, my knee swelled and became very painful. Shortly after, my other knee started acting up. I could barely walk let alone climb a pair of steps. After three months of misdiagnoses and a bad MRI read, I found an orthopedic surgeon who diagnosed me with autoimmune inflammatory arthritis. I’m now seeing a rheumatologist who feels I may have psoriatic arthritis and am now at the early stages of medications. I am hopeful that I’ll find the right one so that I can walk again free of pain. Sometimes the fear of this disease takes hold but my faith keeps me strong.
Needless to say, as soon as I got the shocking diagnosis, I started scouring the internet to educate myself on arthritis and ways to help myself. I found a wealth of information…..inflammatory diets, supplements and exercise programs of which I’m trying them all.
What I didn’t find was any support groups in or around our area for arthritis. While searching for one, I came across the Arthritis Support Network. I didn’t hesitate to send in an application to be a volunteer for my community.
I am committed and passionate about whatever I decide to get involved in. Some years ago when I was President of the Board of Directors for the Johnstown Figure Skating Club, our team brought new life into the club by adding dynamic coaches, free clinics, new skating programs and yearly skating events. I am hoping to utilize these skills in developing an amazing arthritis support group in our community.
I am so excited to start this new journey as an Arthritis Support Network Leader with the Arthritis Foundation. To me, support is an essential need in our daily life. Just talking to someone who understands what you’re going through calms the mind. And, a positive attitude can curb the fears of arthritis!
I decided to start an arthritis support group because there is a need for one. Since I was diagnosed with arthritis, more people than I realized are afflicted with this disease. I think, as an ASN Leader, I can reach out and help many people with this disease and enhance community awareness.
