About this Arthritis Support Network:
My vision for this Arthritis Support Network is to be able to provide support for those recently diagnosed with a Rheumatoid Disease, letting them know they are not alone in this journey and that there are others on the same journey. The network would also provide ongoing support for those living with a Rheumatoid Disease. Network members will be able to meet and socialize with others that "know where they are coming from" with respect to challenges and physical limitations that may be a result of their disease.
I work full time and volunteer with my church and the Metro parks. I enjoy working outside in my garden in the spring, summer and fall. I enjoy travelling and try to take a couple of trips a year and have been to 5 of the 7 continents. I still need to get Asia and Australia. I live in Columbus, Ohio with my dog and two cats..
I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in 2000 after years of pain and inflammation in various joints and the lower back. Through the years I have been on a variety of medications, both DMARDs and Biologics, that have helped to control my disease progression to some extent. I try to live as full a life as possible while I can, not knowing what the future will bring.
At one time, there was a fairly active Arthritis support group in Columbus, of which I was a member. This group helped me great deal in coping with the ups and downs of living and working with RA. The group has dwindled in size over the past several years, coinciding with the discontinued support by the Arthritis Foundation. After hearing about Arthritis Support Network and renewed support by the Arthritis Foundation, another support group member and I decided that the ASN could help us grow our network here in Central Ohio.
At age 16 I was diagnosed with psoriasis but not for another seven years did I learn that my increasing joint discomfort was psoriatic arthritis, one of the rheumatoid forms. By age 33, I had had a hip replacement and in three more years both knees. By then, I was seriously depressed and really needed people to talk with about living with the disease. At that time, I knew a great deal about disability because I had already worked for ten years for the state government’s vocational rehabilitation agency assisting people with disabilities to prepare for and find work despite disability. But that knowledge was of scant value. This was personal. And the local Arthritis Foundation had little to offer at that time.
But that was many years ago and now I am the nominal head of a small band of local people with RA who already meet here regularly. By becoming a part of the Arthritis Support Network, our group will be reaching out to many others who struggle to manage their RA. I want for there never to be another person—such as i was—who contacts help and comes away empty handed.
