Arthritis Support Network launched: 2017
Arthritis Support Network Leader: Jim Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis & Reynauds
About this Arthritis Support Network:
My vision for this Arthritis Support Network includes the creation of a safe, supportive environment where people can come together and share their experience living with arthritis. I see a group that is comfortable with each other enjoying fun activities together while learning more and more about this disease and the many treatment options. Most important, for me, is the understanding we are not alone on this journey. Seeing the need for mutual support and understanding in our area, I can envision the network growing as we move into the future.
I have lived in Western New York my entire life. I am married and we have one daughter and a granddaughter. I've worked various human services jobs over the years, and have a lot of experience in program development. These include outdoor experiential programs for troubled youth, a camp for children of addicts, and a drop-in after school program for middle school children. I am a published author of journal articles as well as a book about my life journey. I have volunteered for various organizations and, together with my granddaughter, have raised money producing illustrated poetry booklets. I have earned two Master's degrees and am an ordained minister, currently serving part time at a rural United Church of Christ.
My family has experienced several forms of autoimmune diseases, including Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Raynaud's, and Gout. Starting in my childhood, I have had three family members die of from various complications. After being diagnosed myself, I learned that there is no support in this area of New York State. In 2016, I lost my younger brother who had lived with RA over twenty years. Before he died, he told me "nobody understands what I am going through."
