Arthritis Support Network launched: 2018

Arthritis Support Network Leader: Heidi           Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis

About this Arthritis Support Network:

Living with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases can be challenging. I would like to create a space where individuals who are affected by arthritis and other rheumatic diseases and their loved ones can learn, have fun, support one another, and develop friendships.

About: Heidi

I am an occupational therapist, and I have spent my career working with adults and children with a variety of health challenges. Currently I work in an acute rehabilitation hospital with adults affected by brain injury. A little over a year ago I was diagnosed with RA, and I now have to practice what I have been teaching my clients.

I have a positive outlook on life, and I choose to focus on the lessons I am learning from RA rather than activities that are more difficult for me now. I am a better occupational therapist because I've learned to be more empathetic to the challenges my clients are facing. I have learned to say no without feeling guilty because I know that I have to take care of myself if I want to continue doing all the things I love to do.

In my spare time I am an avid reader. I joined a book club shortly after I moved to Charlotte, and we continue to meet monthly. The women in my book club are now some of my dearest friends.

I am bringing an Arthritis Support Network to my community because when I was first diagnosed, I figured I would start treatment and then be back to my old self in a few months. RA had other ideas, and we are still working on the best treatment plan for me. Attending an Arthritis Foundation educational event was life-changing for me. I was missing out on having support from other people who have similar experiences. When I learned that Charlotte doesn't currently have a support group, I wanted to start one so that I could learn from other people living with RA.

Hello.  My wife is a professional who runs her own business and was recently diagnosed with RA.  She and I are in our late 40's and she is already beginning to see joint damage that is causing walking to be painful and she is losing some of her grip strength.  I am looking for suggestions on how I can be a better supportive spouse as we navigate this diagnosis.  Any suggestions? We live along the NC coast so attending meetings in Charlotte would be tricky to schedule.
