Arthritis Support Network Leader: Nicky                     Type of Arthritis: Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis

About this Arthritis Support Network:

My vision for this support group is to provide a safe place for adults to come together and share their experiences, struggles and successes. My hope is that this group can provide support, community and friendship to those with arthritis and rheumatic conditions.

About: Nicky

Hello! My name is Nicky. I am a 30-something year old and have had JRA since I was 5 years old. Growing up I did not have access to others who had similar diagnoses and did not meet another with arthritis until I was well into my 20s. As many of you, I struggled growing up feeling alone, left out, and with major body image and self-esteem issues.

I was inspired by a special nurse who administered many of my treatments and decided to become a nurse myself. I currently work full time as a registered nurse, volunteer for Girl Scouts as a service unit manager for the Maple Grove area as well as a troop leader for both of my daughters.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and 3 children, watching movies, playing games, reading books, photography and being outdoors.

If you are living with Rheumatoid Arthritis or other rheumatic conditions such as Juvenile Arthritis, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and are newly diagnosed, a seasoned vet, or somewhere in between, you are invited to join us.  Friends and family are welcome!  I look forward to connecting with you soon!

Hey all,

My name is Faith, I am 25 years old and was diagnosed at the age of 20 with RA. I recently started seeing a new doctor and am weary of the medication they are wishing to change my prescription to, I was wondering if you all could tell me wht you have tried, what has worked and what hasn't and why... if you are comfortable.

I am mostly interested also to see if anyone has tried alternative medicines compared to Western style.

Wish you all the best and flexibility.

-Faith

Hi Faith,

I'm Tim. Been fighting RA for 26 years. Mny different drugs with harsh side effects. I found an

anti inflamation diet that I've been on for a year. Been able to cut my drugs in half.

Googlr "Cellular Healing Diet". it's strict but very effective.

I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming meeting.

Tim

I am currently playing around with the AutoImmune Protocol (AIP). I know for sure that refined sugar, dairy, and simple carbs contribute to my pain and inflammation. When I am in a flare, my tools that help are Epsom salt baths (or foot soaks if I am flaring in my shouldersand can't utilize the tub), heating pads, cold packs, Ace bandage wraps, my knee brace, compression socks that I use on whatever limb is hurting, and making sure I get 15 minutes of sunshine a day. I know Arava (Leflunomide) is working very well for me as I have gone 3 1/2 years with minimal deformities. Other than that, no other prescriptions have helped except Prednisone.
I look forward to meeting you!

Hi Faith, My apologies for not responding sooner...I didn't realize we had this board! These are great questions. Several folks in our group have tried various different things besides medicine. These are topics we often discuss at our meetings. We would love to see you there!

Hi Faith, I've tried Enbrel and had the best results while on that.  Unfortunately, I had to switch doctors because I moved to a new state, and my new doctor switched medicaitons on me and nothing has worked since.  Besides Prednisone.  Right now I'm on Humira and it only works on 40% of my inflammed joints.

Best results with pain have been changing my diet, accupuncture, and swimming or any kind of water therapy (hot tub!)

Hi Nicky,

I cannot make next weeks meeting.

Still have questions.

Can I leave them on this note and perhaps these questions can be discussed and information passed on to me? I have had RA diagnosed ofr six months. Take Methtrexate and prednisone. Swelling and pain in fingers, wrists. Does any one else in the support group take these drugs and what good and bad effects have the drugs had? That is all.
