About this Arthritis Support Network:
We hope to create a welcoming space for us to share our trials and triumphs as we navigate life with a chronic illness. Our vision for this group is to create a fun, welcoming environment for people living with all forms of arthritis to come together to support and learn from each other.
Hi everyone! My name is Dawn and I am the leader of the brand new Bloomington-Normal Illinois Arthritis Support Network. It is my hope that, as a group, we can come together to support, learn from, and raise each other up. My goal is to create a network of people who all have a common ground – living with arthritis and do so with fun, learning, and support. My personal arthritis journey began in 2013 with the diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis. Other elements have joined the “party” since then. In the past few years, I have become involved with the Arthritis Foundation and Arthritis Introspective. I am beginning on the journey of advocate and ambassador with the Arthritis Foundation as well.
Central Illinois is lacking in arthritis related support groups. I have come to know many people with arthritis and as someone with arthritis myself; I know that we all need people we can turn to that understand, that “get it.” That is why I decided to volunteer and form an Arthritis Support Network right here for people in Bloomington-Normal and surrounding areas.
As I have gone through my journey, there have been some great changes in my life, both good and bad. The good is that I have become aware of who I am and what I want to do with my life. I feel like I have found my purpose – to raise awareness, support others with arthritis as much as I possibly can, and be a fighter for all of us.
Men and women, with any type of arthritis are welcome; whether your journey with arthritis is just beginning or you have been living with the diagnosis for years, this is the place for you! Let’s come together to connect, learn from each other, support each other, and most of all, have fun.
My RA diagnosis certainly explained what had been going on with my joints for years, but in those early months of having a name for it, I found myself longing for my "old life." The life where I worked with special needs students, cared for my elderly mother, whipped up a batch of cookies and still had energy left over. I briefly considered just spending my days on the couch with a box of Kleenex, the hostess of a perpetual pity party.
Then my daughter directed me to the Arthritis Introspective site. I began to read. I had found my people! The stories and strategies and honesty shared by others encouraged me to get off of the couch and get on with it. Some days RA requires that I take it a bit slower and easier but I'm learning to accept the unpredictable nature of the disease. As a support group co leader, I can offer a listening ear, an encouraging word, and share laughter that helps keep the RA clouds away!
