Live Yes! Connect Facilitator: LaTosha Type of Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis
About this Live Yes! Connect Group:
I will provide arthritis information, empowerment, support and networking opportunities to help people overcome the physical and psychological challenges of having a severe chronic illness. Also, I will create a safe environment for sharing feelings, concerns, and thought of living with arthritis.
My name is LaTosha and I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 25. I was in denial for many years and attempted to continue going on with my life. I woke up many mornings trying to act as if I did not have the disease and was all right. I felt like my life was over before I have a chance to live and enjoy it. I could not deal with that fact that I was unable to live vibrantly and live an outgoing life that most people my age lived. I went through seven surgeries in over an eight-year period. I became so depressed because it seemed like I was not only losing myself but also my friends and family. I am grateful to the nurse practitioner Heidi who encouraged me to get involve with the Arthritis Foundation and which I have been volunteering for over 15 years. The Arthritis Foundation gave me the opportunity.to network and meet new friends and build a support system.
I am starting a group because as much as I love Haydee and the West LA Group, the distance is too far to attend the support group meetings. It will be a great opportunity to have a group in the Lakewood – Norwalk area. As a leader, I will lead by example which means attending trainings, building a great support network and being open to change and trying new things. I would like others to input on ideas, to share their skills, knowledge and their expertise.
