About this Arthritis Support Network:

Our vision for this Arthritis Support Network is for it to be a place where we can come together and openly talk about our thoughts without any fear of judgment. We want to help those with Arthritis to get support, information, and education. The more we know and better equipped we are, the better we can advocate for ourselves and manage a chronic illness. It will be a safe place where having fun, thinking with an open mind & supporting each other are the only requirements.  We are so excited to be leading a group in Central Al and can't wait to meet all of you!

About: Casey

Hi everyone!  I'm Casey and I'm in my 30s. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis in 2008. I enjoy painting and coloring. I can't do everything I could before but I try and do most of what I can. I'm on disability so I'm home all the time. I have always wanted to help people and I'm happy to have this chance.

I wanted to become a group leader because initially I didn't realize there was help and support for someone like me until I attended the Arthritis Introspective Gathering Conference G9. The overwhelming support and friendships I made in that one weekend made me realize a Support Network had to be set up in Alabama for people with Arthritis.

About: Jill

I was diagnosed with RA as a child in the late 80’s when doctors knew far less and medications were less advanced. It has been 30 years with this disease and so much has improved. My rheumatologists have always treated aggressively, which helped me slow the progression of the RA and have less joint damage. I have had a foot fusion and that is my only RA surgery so far. I am married, in midlife, and have a young daughter. Learning to manage this disease with a child is challenging and I am always learning and seeking out new information and treatments for the future.

I was in social work and then a mental health therapist for 17, years but became disabled 2 years ago. Having others to talk to who also have experience with arthritis has been eye-opening and so helpful. I recently joined the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) for a local hospital and look forward to being part of the Arthritis Foundation Support Network locally.

I am joining Casey and Robyn in leading a group because I attended my first Arthritis United Conference this year, and it was the first time I had spoken so openly with others about my RA. I believe it would be so helpful for anyone with arthritis to have this kind of support and am looking forward to being part of this in my state.
